Our plants

Saturday, March 5, 2011

A few weeks ago we decided to start an indoor garden. We purchased basil and cilantro seeds and our little friends have finally started to grow! We have many gardening goals this year so if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. We want to..

1. grow tea mints (spearmint, peppermint, lemongrass) so we can dry them and blend our own teas
2. grow as many fruits and veggies as we can in our garden area at our new house. We can't wait to have fresh produce, while canning plenty for winter time.
3. We want to pick up what we can't grow at the Farmer's Markets and hopefully make some juice blends. Fruit only, V8 style, you name it.

This project was partly inspired by the fact that our society is for the most part, lacking self-reliance. From the food we eat and the water we drink, to our electricity and transportation. What happened to the beauty of being self-sufficient? Even though we live in a society with countless advances that grant us an easier lifestyle, we wouldn't mind breaking away from that reality a bit. We want to be more self-sufficient, even if it's in the smallest way. Our small actions have led us to be more informed about (and play a bigger role in) where our food comes from, knowing that when we buy used clothing we are not supporting the sad reality of sweat shops, reducing our intake of plastics and paper and simply realizing that the way we live does make a difference.

Here's to our plant plans 2011 :)  Anyone else have any plant plans this year?

Look at it grow!
Our cilantro showed itself for the first time today
We also plan to go foraging for edible wild plants.

And this (my valentine's present from Kent) has been a wonderful guide. We highly recommend!

  3. Awesome! For a few years now we've tried to grow cilantro from seed...but it is so dang hard! We eventually went and got starters from a nursery. Hopefully if all this snow stops soon you guys can utilize your fabulous deck space! :)

  4. Love this post. Good luck! We started a garden last year and it was fun, but we got bad soil so we didn't get much food. Thank you for writing about food awareness. Chris and I have slowly been becoming more aware of where we get our food and the treatment of the kind of food we eat. My body and soul feels better because of it.

  5. @Jessica: It is so hard! We didn't think the cilantro would grow at all and then it surprised ups today. Oh you bet we have plans for our deck :). We're going to hang them from the railings, it will be great.

@Randi: Hopefully our soil cooperates this year. It will be a good experiment. We are totally in to anything promoting food awareness, so if you find anything inspiring from your studies, please share. :) ps. we really miss you guys. We need to plan a camping trip this summer.

  6. You'll have to let me know how it goes! I've tried growing basil and cilantro and rosemary from starters in our little condo before but... they all died within a couple of weeks :( I'm not very good with the plants. I think I've been cursed since last winter when I left my dorm plants in the car overnight while shooting a wedding in Manti, UT. Oops!
